The International Dyslexia Association – Pennsylvania (IDA-PA) is proud to recognize Kate Mayer and Center School as the recipients of the 2024 Hoopes Award. Both honorees exemplify outstanding contributions to the field of dyslexia advocacy, education, and support, making a profound impact on individuals and communities alike.
Kate Mayer: A Personal and Professional Mission
Kate Mayer’s advocacy journey began as both an educator and a parent. Like many parents, she initially believed her teaching degree provided her with all the tools to support her son’s literacy. However, his struggles revealed a different reality.
“I was shocked to learn that my teaching degree did not prepare me to teach reading in an evidence-based way,” Kate shared. “This knowledge gap, combined with the social-emotional toll on my son, ignited my passion for change.”
As the founder of Everyone Reads PA, Kate has worked tirelessly to bring evidence-based reading instruction to children who need it most. Her focus on community-based literacy screenings has been transformative, not only in helping individual students but in challenging systemic practices.
“Providing transparency in data and focusing on prevention has made a profound difference,” she explained. “It’s about helping children avoid the need to wait to fail.”
Despite resistance from entrenched systems, Kate remains steadfast in her mission. She debunks the myth that children with dyslexia cannot become proficient readers or writers, advocating for high expectations and equitable access to resources.
“This is a pressing social justice issue,” she affirmed. “Every child deserves the chance to read, write, and communicate effectively.”
Kate’s collaboration with families is integral to her work. By providing training and fostering transparency in schools, she builds partnerships that prioritize children’s success. Her efforts have resulted in life-changing transformations for families and students, inspiring a brighter future.
